Abstract Introduction: Τhe prevalence of childhood obesity has been doubled worldwide during the last 20 years, reaching epidemic levels. Soft drinks, juice drinks and sugar consumption is associated with high body mass index and obesity in child- and adulthood. Hypothesis: The hypothesis of the study is that a health and nutrition education program can have an impact on the soft drinks, juice drinks, sweets and sugar consumption of children who attend 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade of primary schools. Purpose: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a health and nutrition education program on the soft drinks, juice drinks, sweets and sugar consumption, as well as the relation of consuming the above products with obesity, physical exercise, nutrient intake and eating habits in general. Method: A health, nutrition and physical activity intervention was implemented in primary schools, comprised of children aged 6-9 years and attending 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades in the Prefecture of Chania during the 2006-2007 school years. At the end of intervention program, food intake was evaluated by means of a 3-day food record used by 489 children – intervention group n = 242, control group n = 247). Results: In the beginning of the program, there were no significant differences on BMI, energy consumption and soft drinks, juice drinks, sweets and sugar consumption, between the two groups. At the end of one-year intervention program, comparison of soft and juice drinks, sweets and sugar consumption among intervention and control group demonstrates no significant differences. Increased consumption of these products in the intervention group was not associated with obesity and lower consumption of fruit and vegetables; it was though associated with lower energy intake from monounsaturated fat (p = 0.028). Increased consumption of these products in the control group seems significantly related to low fruit consumption (p<0.05, 289±162 gr), vegetable consumption (p<0.05, 239±137 gr) and consumption of these two together (p<0.001, 181±115 gr). Furthermore, higher soft drinks, juice drinks, sweets and sugar consumption (p=0.029) leads to a significantly higher prevalence of central obesity among children of the control group. In the control group, consumption >100gr per day raises the children’s risk of developing obesity to 3.84 times in comparison with children of the reference (OR=3.84, p=0.016). Conclusion: Soft drinks, juice drinks, sweets and sugar consumption are associated with obesity development and unhealthy eating habits. It is possible that a longer duration of a health, nutrition and exercise program is required in order to record significant changes in the consumption of these products.
