Abstract |
Introduction: Eating habits start to be formed at the early stages of life but they
are established mostly during the adolescence and University student years as
young adults. The socio-economic status (SES) affects individual health and the
health of the populations. However, the potential role of SES in shaping the
quality of eating behaviours has not been investigated in detail in Greece yet.
Methods: The current cross-sectional analysis draws data from the LATO study
and explores the associations of family’s socio-economic status and dietary
habits of freshmen of TEI of Crete of (N=1138). The consumption frequencies of
fruits, vegetables, soft drinks, breakfast and delivery food were associated with
the following socio-economic indicators: the Family Affluence Scale II (FAS II),
father’s and mother’s educational level and family’s self-reported economic
status. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21.0 was used to
perform logistic regression models after adjusting for potential confounders.
Results: Boys with median socio-economic family affluence had more than
double odds of consuming delivery food (OR=2.44, 95% CI=1.27, 4.70) and soft
drinks (OR=5.05, 95% CI=1.04, 24.43) in relation to those of low socio-economic
affluence. The associations were of statistical significance for boys, but not for
girls. Father’s high educational level was associated in a protective way with
boys’ consumption of delivery food (OR=0.42, 95% CI= 0.18, 0.95) and soft
drinks (OR=0.19, 95% CI=0.05, 0.72).
Conclusions: The majority 1st year Higher Education Students were not
following the diet recommendations of prominent organisations. There is
evidence that SES may associate with freshmen’s eating habits in a harmful way.
Interventions targeting eating behaviours are needed at higher education
institutes.
