Abstract Introduction: The traditional medicine and the use of therapeutic and aromatic herbs have been adopted by various cultures in the world, having the ability to heal a host of chronic and infectious diseases. It is estimated that 31-70% of the world population uses traditional healing practices for a large number of diseases, acute or chronic. (WHO 2002) Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to study the therapeutic and aromatic herbs and indigenous healing practices in a semi-rural area of Crete. Method: This study was conducted and completed in two phases: First phase of the literature review and the second phase of the interview for the conduct of qualitative research. The study involved selected adults (n = 15) residents of the Archanon city aged 36 to 87 years, as key informants with knowledge of herbs and traditional healing practices through inventories of the Archanon city and field investigation of the residents of the area with the Snowballing effect method. The purposive method was used. The methodology of analysis that was used was the content analysis. Results: Overall all the respondents indicated that herbs are used on a daily basis for both the prevention and the treatment of diseases. Specifically, twenty-four different species of herbs were reported that they use when they feel unwell in cold, cough, stomachache, in toothache and insect bites. The majority (n = 12) of the respondents indicated that diktamos in beverage is a curative form for the stomach, cold, the sore throat, increases the libido and helps diabetes. Conclusion: This study recorded several therapeutic uses of aromatic herbs and traditional practices add to the findings of corresponding studies from the University of Crete and the University of Leiden in Netherlands.
