Abstract

The mental health of medical students seems to be different from the mental health of general population and influence the variables “health habits” (smoke habit and height consume of alcohol). The aim of this research is to present the general situation of medical students’ mental health and the percentage of those who illustrate high levels of smoking habit and of those who consume alcohol. The sample of the study was 285 first year medicine student who attent the University of Crete during the years 2004-2008. The number of male students was 119 and the number of female students was 161 and 5 didn’t fill the demographic part. Two weighted questionnaires were used, the first one was the GHQ-28 and the second one was one weighted in Greek, Swedish questionnaire which is called “healthmeter”.This questionnaire was about the smoking habit, the high consuming of alcohol, the satisfaction of economics and the satisfaction of education. The questionnaires were self-filled.The statistics were analysed by the SPSS software. Results: The frequencies of the abnormal responses for mental health was 1% the male and 5% the female.The frequencies of the smoking habit was 14,9% the female and 10,1% the male.The 5,9% of the male filled that they drink too much alcohol. The variables “general mental health’ and “smoking habit” of the sample present negative correlation (R = 0,163 R2= 0,027 p-value=0,007 b=-0,561) . The variables “general mental health” and “consuming alcohol habit” of the sample, present negative correlation (R = 0,106 R2= 0,011 p-value= 0,079 b= -0,326).
