Abstract |
The present postgraduate research examined the reasons that the student are not in the same efficient learning level in text production as happens with the spoken language. That is why, this research tries to detect and find the reasons of these student’s and teacher’s difficulties, as well as their teaching suggestions for improvement in the last grades of primary school. Specifically, the research investigated the teachers practices, their opinions and the theoretical approaches that form their personal theory about teaching of text production in the primary school. The research lasted a school year. The sample of the research consisted of incrumbent teachers of the same school of an island district, who during the 2021-2022 school year worked in grades 1st to 6th. The method of the research was the qualitative one and the semi-structured interviews. The results of the research showed that teachers express their opinions about teaching of text genres and the text-based approach and use practices of teaching and instruction for all of the stages of the writing process. However, the majority of teachers do not use strategies for the ‘during writing’ stage and for the processes of writing and reviewing. They highlight specific difficulties of their students’ text production. They believe the acquisition and use of strategies important, but they do not refer to their systematic teaching in the classroom. Regarding students’ reading comprehension teachers not only highlight a deficiency of skills and strategies, but also they try to investigate the probable causes of these difficulties. They believe that students’ reading comprehension and text production are testable, but especially regarding reading comprehension the majority of teachers believe that it depends more on other factors than instruction. Some teachers highlight that there is the demand for student autonomy as a writer, but do not refer the way to do this through teaching.
