Abstract |
The concept and image of God is a topic that has occupied a multitude of scientists around the world in recent decades. In fact, the interest in the way God is perceived has been focused on both early childhood and childhood. In fact, interest in the way God is perceived has been focused on early and middle childhood. The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the way children, who attend Kindergarten and the 5th grade of Primary School, perceive God. The sample of the study consisted of 80 children (boys and girls), residents of the cities of Argos (Prefecture of Argolida) and Rethymnon (Prefecture of Rethymnon). For conducting the survey, the child's drawing and the semi-structured interview were used in combination, producing very productive results. For the processing and analysis of the findings, thematic analysis was adopted utilizing the axes - themes, identified in the representational children's drawings. According to the results, the majority of children in both age phases tend to perceive God anthropomorphically. More specifically, children imagine a male God who protects people and lives in heaven. This idea, however, seems to be declining in the plans of primary school students. The existence of more abstract depictions and the inclusion of natural and religious symbols in a greater proportion in the representations of older participants suggests that children's thinking undergoes changes as they grow older. Based on the representational choices of the children's sample as a whole, it was clearly shown that children's perceptions are differentiated and evolve depending on the stimuli received, the lived experiences, the degree of interaction with the various environments, and, finally, the age of the subjects in relation to their developmental maturation.
