Abstract |
According to the new legislation, children with disabilities and/or special educational
needs are no longer categorized and sent to special schools, the strategy adopted in Special
Education is the equal participation of all the students in the educational process, and the
inclusive education of children with and without disability and/or special educational needs. In
recent decades, the discussions and concerns of researchers have focused on the perceptions of
teachers, students and parents of children with disabilities and/or special educational needs
towards the institution of inclusive education. The perceptions and attitudes of parents of
typically developing children have been researched to a lesser extent. The purpose of this
research was to investigate the perceptions of parents of typically developing children attending
kindergarten and elementary school regarding the inclusive education of children with and
without disabilities and/or special educational needs in general school. One hundred and
twenty-seven parents of children with typical development who attend a kindergarten and
primary school in the Prefecture of Heraklion participated in the research. The research was
conducted with a questionnaire that was structured in two sections, the first section concerns
the demographic data of the participants and the second section consists of two five-point Likert
scales a) the scale of Stoiber, Gettinger, & Goetz (1998), My thinking about inclusion (MTAI)
b) And the scale created by Bezevegis, Kalantzis & Zoniou – Sideri (1995). The results of the
survey showed that parents of children with typical development had an overall positive attitude
towards the implementation of inclusive education and would seek any interaction with children
with disabilities and/or special educational needs both for themselves and for their children.
While in relation to the demographic data, no differences were noted in the parents' perception
regarding to gender, age, educational level or place of residence.
