Abstract |
Aim. Although Sex education is considered crucial for the multifaceted and integrated development of children, it is still a controversial topic in literature. In Greece, Sex Education is almost non-existent in the school curriculum in every school grade. The role of Sex Education is vital and aims at the betterment of society. Cases of sexual abuse that have come to light in our country have paved the way for the inclusion of Sex Education in primary education. The purpose of my thesis is to research the views of parents, whose children attend primary school, for the potential inclusion of Sex Education in primary school and the different aspects of Sex Education. Sample and Methodology. The sample consisted of 20 parents, 10 of whom live in Athens and the remaining 10 in Rethymno, Crete. An interview guide was created for the needs of the research involving the following thematic areas: Demographic Characteristics, Parent-child Communication, Parents' Feelings, Educator Eligibility, Appropriateness of School Grade, Reasons of Inclusion and Objections, Educator's Qualifications and Content of Sex Education. Results. The results overall have shown that parents are positive regarding the inclusion of Sex Education in primary schools. The place of residence and the educational background doesn't seem to affect their views on Sex Education matters. Also, educational training is a basic criterion for the person who will teach a course with this theme. However, the educator's personality defines the views of parents. Lastly, regarding the topics/content of Sex Education, the majority of parents wish their children to be taught every topic in primary school, depending on the child's age and appropriate approach. Conclusions. Overall, parents support the inclusion of Sex Education in Greek primary school, but their positive attitude is not enough by itself. The criteria posed are, the training of educators as well as the approach to issues according to age. Lastly, they support that it is a vital need to include a Sex Education course at schools due to the recent events of sexual abuse that have become public.
