Abstract |
The fairy tale is the most recognized kind of children's literature that exerts a significant influence on the child’s holistic development. This particular literary genre follows man from antiquity to the present day. The way fairytales have been presented and modified over the yearsis directly related to the historical-social-cultural context of each era.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the role of fairy tales in the education and development of children as well as the way they are perceived in relation to the views and beliefs of the parents about the particular literary genre. For the purposes of examining the above, family surveys were conducted involving parents and their children.
The survey sample consists of (6) parents and (4) children aged 7-8 and 11-12 years old and all the research was based on qualitative methodology. More specifically, in order to carry out an in depth case study, the triangulation method (individual semi-structured clinical interview and tracing) was used in conjunction with content analysis.
The research results suggest that all subjects have come in contact with the literary genre of fairy tales, some to a greater and others to a lesser extent. The degree of familiarity of children with the fairy tale and its specificities, open-close end, happy and unhappy ending is directly related to the perceptions and choices of the parents.
According to the data analysis, the fairytale considerablyinfluences the child’s moral, emotional and cognitive development, and the process of perceiving fairytales varies according to the context to the child. The experiences which derive from the aforementioned framework are what the children are called to verbalize during their interactionwith the literary genre of fairy tales.
The present study offers original data that contributes to the in-depth understanding of this case focused on the role of fairy tales in the child's life, giving rise to reflection and suggestions for future research.
