Abstract The subject of this assignment is the design, implementation and evaluation of educational material with the Distance Education methodology for teaching the Local History course to Grade 3 Primary School students and in particular the case of the fountains of the old town of Rethymnon. The evaluation was done by from distance education experts and by students studying in Grade 3 of Primary School, who also evaluated the augmented reality digital game designed as part of the feedback and self-evaluation of the trainees after studying the educational material. The research that was carried out came to the following conclusions: this educational material has been designed based on the principles and methodology of distance education and the principles of the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning. Also, according to the students who evaluated the main educational material, it turns out that it is quite easy to use, attractive and the activities it includes are easy and helpful for repeating and consolidating new knowledge. The strong points of educational material include the comprehensible presentation of the knowledge object, the correct structure in the content, the clarity of the expected learning outcomes and the interaction between educational material and the learner. With reference to the augmented reality digital game, it appears that its use was relatively easy and as a whole the game was characterized as fun, pleasant and helpful for consolidating the new knowledge the students received about the fountains of the old city of Rethymno. In general, this new way of teaching the Local History lesson is preferred by the students, because they find it fun, use technological means and applications and learn the local history in a different and alternative way. In fact, they would like this method of teaching to be applied to other subjects as well.
