Abstract Reading difficulties are a primary cause for students to refer in special education services (Therrien & Kubina, 2006). Reading with fluency is a necessary skill that pupils must conquer to be successful in academic tasks , but also in their later life. The aim of the following research study was to investigate the implications of an intervention program in improving reading fluency in students with learning difficulties. The sample consisted of twelve pupils of the third and fourth grader of elementary school with reading difficulties .Study’s methodology was based on the single subject design, and the intervention process was designed on the basis of the "Lexical Quality Hypothesis". According to this hypothesis , the intervention focused in teaching phonology and morphology, decoding and fluency, and reading comprehension. The intervention program consisted of three phases of sessions, and took place approximately four months. Students were assessed, before and after of each phase of the sessions. Also initial and post measures were conducted. The results of the initial evaluation showed that the majority of the pupils had low reading performance. According to the post-intervention results, all students improved their reading fluency in word and pseudo-word level. Improvements were observed also in text-level fluency, with exception of two pupils. The improvements in reading fluency led to improved performance in reading comprehension and consequently in their general reading skills. Indeed, some of the students showed a remarkable increase in their performance. In conclusion, the following study demonstrates the importance of conducting comprehensive interventions, in the areas of phonology, decoding , fluency and reading comprehension.
