Abstract |
This thesis constitutes a proposal to incorporate the subject of climate change in the existing Greek, Primary School Curriculum via the use of ICT. The general purpose of the thesis is to help change the behavior of teachers and pupils alike by encouraging their online engagement with the subject, thereby promoting action aiming towards the prevention of climate change. The thesis (defines and) explains the phenomenon of climate change and presents its environmental, social and economical consequences. It also describes how Climate Change Education for Sustainable Development has developed out of global studies. The theories of learning that this thesis supports (critical pedagogical theory, transformative learning, the scientific/educational model and the ExConTra learning model), Curriculum design theories and the use of ICT in education are analyzed next. An open cross-thematic Curriculum has been designed and integrated into the existing Greek Curriculum. A new online educational platform has been designed by Drupal and Flash to support this Curriculum. The implementation of the project was effected via participatory, emancipatory, action research. The three cycles of this action research are described thoroughly in the thesis. According to the results of the research, its main purpose and most of its secondary objectives have been accomplished. The teachers who participated in the outdoor school activities with their students, remained simple observers and facilitators of the process throughout. When the project was concluded, the teachers expressed the desire to organize outdoor school activities in the future, aiming to encourage action and promote change in problematic situations. Further research with regard to how teachers might be motivated to adopt new and innovative teaching and learning methods is recommended.
