Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to study the importance of management practices for business performance. The theoretical framework on which the analysis is based is that of Bloom and Van Reenen (2006), according to which, companies owned by the family and its founders are characterized by inefficient management practices, while non-family companies usually follow better practices. Management practices are of course not the only factor that affects business performance, intense competition and high employee skills are associated with better performance and more efficient management practices. In this thesis, we use a sample of 171 small and medium sized enterprises from the clothing retail sector in Greece and based on their answers to an extensive questionnaire, we document the management practices they use, we construct an index of the quality of management practices, following Bloom's and Van Reenen's (2006) methodology, and we estimate correlations between the quality of management practices and the returns (productivity) of the firms in the sample. The results show that the 171 Greek businesses in the sample, of which 80 are family-owned, show better average scores than we expected compared to the survey by Bloom et al. (2012).
