Abstract |
It is known that Learning Disabilities (LD) have been associated with the presence of behavioral problems that can range from aggressiveness to apathy or introversion (Grigorenko, 2001). Children who experience specific problems, such as those with Special Learning Disabilities, are more likely to develop a mental disorder and higher levels of anxiety and fear in comparison with typically developing children (Caron & Rutter, 1991∙ Al-Yagon & Mikulincer, 2004). The present research is an effort to investigate the relationship between gender of students with LD and the occurrence of emotional and behavioral problems. The review of the literature revealed the direct connection of the LD with the emergence of behavioral problems, emotional disorders and conduct problems. Also, several studies have shown the relationship between gender and the type of disorder that occurs, as boys experiencing higher rates of externalizing problems than girls, where internalizing problems are more frequent. The sample of the study consisted of 129 children with LD studying in Secondary Education. For the purpose of this study, the Greek adjustment of the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) was administered to students. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) is a brief behavioral screening questionnaire that evaluate anxiety disorders and can be completed by parents, teachers and students. In the present study, the questionnaires filled out by teachers of children with LD As there is a limited number of research on this topic in the Greek area, the present study could provide useful data and contribute to the investigation of behavioral problems of students with LD studying in Secondary Education.
