Abstract The unprecedented condition of the pandemic affected all sectors of society, worldwide. Specifically in education, due to the suspension of the daily operation of school units, teaching has shifted to new digital, distance learning environments. This sudden change created new work and educational data for those directly involved, who, although unprepared, had to respond immediately. In fact, the educational process is described as Emergency Remote Teaching, since it had the character of a temporary form of providing distance learning, in emergency conditions. In the context of the study, the experiences of Primary Education teachers in the prefecture of Rethymno, during the pandemic period, were investigated. From the analysis of the quantitative and qualitative data, it appears that the teachers encountered several technological difficulties, mainly due to a lack of knowledge in handling digital tools and therefore in managing technological problems. Also, there were obstacles in their pedagogical work, finding a lack of satisfactory interaction with the students. In fact, it was deemed necessary to reformulate the teaching strategies and learning objectives. Working from home, the shifting of working hours, the demanding and long hours of preparation of the lessons disrupted and made the personal and family life of the teachers difficult. It emerged that during this period the teachers experienced intense stress and anxiety. In addition, both female and older teachers struggled mainly in matters of their personal lives. In the process mentioned above, teachers with insufficient technological knowledge had difficulty. More generally, they consider that digital education does not achieve the inclusion of students, while it increases their physical and mental exhaustion. They believe, that in the future, it can be used as a tool to violate their labor rights, by reducing jobs. Several teachers consider that the involvement in digital education and digital tools was an opportunity for technological enrichment of teaching as well as of their personal skills. Finally, the majority considers digital education to be ineffective, deeming a future parallel use of it and traditional classroom learning unnecessary. They maintain a cautious attitude, however, in an exclusively supportive application of it in times of crisis and emergency conditions.
