Abstract The current study utilizes Protection Motivation Theory and Theory of Planned Behavior to explore official government information contribution to Greeks intention to adapt protective behaviors towards covid-19 pandemic and the perceived effectiveness of covid-19 prevention measures. An online questionnaire was distributed at the period July – August 2021 and the relationships between latent variables where analyzed through a Structural Equation Model (SEM). Descriptive statistics revealed very high contribution to “attitude” and “perceived vulnerability”, medium contribution to “understanding”, “perceived severity” and “perceived behavior control” and low contribution to “subjective norms”. Watching frequency and perceived compliance of government information with the recommended key principals for health information where also found low. SEM showed that “intention to follow” is directly affected by “attitude” and “perceived behavior control”, directly and indirectly affected by “watching frequency” and “perceived compliance of government information with recommended key principals” and indirectly affected by “understanding” and “perceived vulnerability and severity”. Perceived effectiveness of Covid-19 prevention measures was found directly affected by “actual behavior”, directly and indirectly affected by “watching frequency” and “perceived compliance of government information with recommended key principals” and indirectly affected by “understanding”, “perceived vulnerability and severity”, “attitude”, perceived behavior control”, and people’s “intention” to follow the protective measures. Thus, we concluded that governments need to focus their information content to factors that lead people’s intentions and perceptions (understanding, attitude, perceived behavior control) which is possible through educating people and providing them with all information needed to help them cope with practical, social and financial consequences deriving from the protective measures. Finally, the study revealed the issue of “trust” in government information that needs to be furtherly explored.
