Abstract The adaptation of people who are Greek in kin, economic refugees and foreigners to Greek reality imposes a new linguistic situation resulting from many non-native pupils' attendance of classes and poses the restructure of the educational system anew as a significant task, bringing out the respect to bilingual foreigners’ cultural heritage as well as lingual resources as a target. This work, carried out at primary schools in the City of Rethymnon during the period 2000-2002, had the special value of Albanian pupils’ first language in the formation of lingual-teaching strategies as a principle as well as the belief that pedagogical task ought to set not the “elimination” of the knowledge of the first language but, on the contrary, its reinforcement and application in promoting the structures of the Greek language as its basis. Answering the general question whether the contrastive approach of two linguistic systems (Greek-Albanian) contributes to the teaching of Greek as a second language, and studying the particular partial issue, that the pedagogical application of contrastive practices in lesson contributes to the better comprehension of the formation-syntactic phenomena as well as to their being learnt more efficiently were the primary goals of this work. The research procedure [two teams’ experimental plan-experimental and control teams with use of precontrol and postcontrol] concentrated on the special difficulty the subjects showed in the grammatical correctness of verbs and in the Aspect as well as on the agreement of (main-subordinate complement clauses) in terms of the sequence of tenses and focused on the assimilation of specific grammatical characteristics and of their syntactic organization on the basis of their differences from the Albanian language as well as on their descriptive and interpretational analysis by the contrastive approach. The data and statistical results confirm –according to our assumptions' the usefulness of foreigners’ first language in learning the Greek language and point out the special importance of contrastive approach as a teaching method in the context of a lingual lesson.
