Abstract |
The dissertation studies a subproblem of the visual motion perception, namely the problem of visual detection of independent 3D motion. Given an obsever pursuing unrestrictef 3D motion, the problem can be defined as the problem of detecting objects that move independently of the observer 3D space. Most of the existing techniques for solving this problem rely on 2D models of motion and on restrictive assumptions about the environment, the observer's motion, or botth in this thesis, four new methods for independent 3D motion detection are proposed, each of which solves a different aspect of the problem. Each of four methods relies on realistic 3D motion models, and does not depend on restrictive assumptions about the environment or the observers' motion. Special emphasis is put towards relying on qualitative processing of the visual input acquired by the observer. Moreover, an integration framework is proposed that enables the exploitation of the merits of each method with respect to a number of different criteria. Experiments have been cerried out by applying each of the proposed methods to both simulated data, and to real sequences of stereoscopic images that were acquired using a robotic platform. The results of these experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the methods in detecting independently moving objects in a variety of scenes, without requiring prior information regarding the motion of the observer of the peremeters of his stereoscopic configuration.
