Abstract |
Research indicates that children with deficits in communication skills are a high-risk group to display learning difficulties and school failure. Such deficits may be related either to lack of understanding of others’ thinking (Theory of Mind) or deficits in executive control of attention. Such difficulties are often noted in Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The goal of the present cross-sectional study was two-fold: First, to establish the internal structure of a battery of language tasks designed to provide comprehensive assessment of language skills in children aged 4 to 7 years; and second to examine the hypothesis that age-related changes in pragmatic skills is, at least, in part mediated by concurrent growth in more basic language skills. Data were obtained from 250 typically developing children attending kindergarten and first grade in four different regions of Greece and residing in urban and rural settings. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the hypothesized internal structure of component tasks designed to measure each of the three underlying dimensions. The results of mediated regression analyses were consistent with a full mediation model of the association between age and the capacity to appreciate pragmatic aspects of language through age-related improvement in lexical knowledge (receptive and expressive vocabulary) and narrative ability.
