Abstract |
General: Entering the inactive period of working life is considered a significant change in the lives of middle-aged people. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the employment status of women in Greece relating to physical and emotional health.
Methodology: The data of this study was drawn from the Research on Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE 2004, Wave 1, Release 2.3.0) which is an accurate unique source of health information on Europeans aged 50 +. For the purpose of our research, the study population involved all women over the age of 50, workers and pensioners who live in Greece, born up to the 31st of December 1954. The research tool is based on the study questionnaire.
Conclusions: Workers claim more life satisfaction than the retired. Depression seems to occur more frequently in women who have retired earlier than those who have acquired rights to a pension at an older age. However, regardless of employment status, the rate of depression appears to be significantly associated with demographic and social factors such as age, marital status and educational level. In the research finding were observed association with chronic diseases and depression, and suggests that in both cases of employment situation of women there is a rising trend based on rating tool CES-D 11. Moreover, an important finding of the study, which is in line with existing findings of social and medical research, is the link between health status with individual behaviour.
This study may contribute to the limited Greek literature on the relationship of the employment situation of women over 50 in Greece with the physical and mental health. However, further research is needed to investigate the relationship between these correlations.
