Abstract The term “tinnitus”, refers to the hearing sense which normally does not have any connection with any external hearing source and does not have the character of sound with such meaning as music or speech but it usually has the characteristics of noise or of clear tones or of combination of the above. Tinnitus is a symptom which goes together with most of the organic or functional disorders of the central or the peripheral hearing system. It usually appears not as a warning of a functional disturbance of the hearing system, but when an organic disorder has already appeared. Today, a few is known which concerns the electrophysiological methods which is the cause of tinnitus or the topographical localization of their source, which results to the absence of a scientifically etiologic therapy proposal for a etiologic treatment of tinnitus. The existing scientific data in the international bibliography which concerns the dealing of the problem of tinnitus is only a few. Logically, the absence of a specific etiologic therapy resulted to the proposal of various techniques or methods for their suppression. The results of those various techniques were discouraging or poor and usually temporary. Generally, it could be mentioned that in the various research studies a tendency towards the improvement of the poor results of a certain technique is noticed and not the search of a possibility of the application of a specific and reliable method with high effectiveness. In the Lab of Audiology-Neurootology of the University Hospital of Heraklion, they try to suppression of tinnitus by the technique of local anaesthetic iontophoresis (HCL lidocaine 2%). Even if this technique is being improved, in some kinds of disease, or in very serious cases of tinnitus, the positive results are a few or they do not exist at all. Trying to deal with this problem, the possibility of the application of for the suppression of tinnitus in the area of alternative medicine was searched. One of the most ancient techniques which has been applied in the area of alternative medicine, refers to acupuncture. The technique of the suppression of tinnitus by acupuncture was a traditional medical method in the history of the Chinese medicine. Today, the technique of the classic acupuncture with various applications and methods was or is applied for the suppression of tinnitus in various centers all over the world. The results seem to be contradictory. In some cases important benefit appears after the use of acupuncture and in some other, poor results. The purpose of this study, on the one hand concerned the estimation of the effectiveness of acupuncture in the case of tinnitus and on the other hand the comparison of the results of acupuncture with the effectiveness of the application of the local anaesthetic iontophoresis. Material-Mode: In the present study took part totally 132 patients aged from 15 to 84 years old, from which 86 were male. The patients were divided into two groups. The first group which consisted of 46 patients was submitted to the method of suppression of tinnitus by local anesthetic iontophoresis. The second group which consisted of 86 patients, included two smaller groups, from which the first which consisted of 60 patients was submitted to classic acupuncture and the second which consisted of 26 patients was submitted to placebo acupuncture. In the placebo group minimal acupuncture was used. The selected spots for its use were SI19, TE17 and LI4. All patients which took part in the study had tinnitus of at least one year duration and had been submitted during the past to various treatments which concerned the subjective symptom of tinnitus without any results. The division of the groups was done by random selection of the patients, trying to include in each group patients with various diseases of the hearing system, of various ages and various duration of the symptom. All patients were submitted to full audiological and neurootological for the evaluation of their hearing system. The iontophoresis meetings took place on an everyday basis for 15 days. Acupuncture took place 3 times per week for 5 weeks. The re-evaluation took place 3 and 6 monts after the completion of the treatment. Results: The results of the application of acupuncture were at first encouraging but the re-evaluation showed that the effectiveness of acupuncture on tinnitus is probably temporary. Its simple application and the absence of contra-indications or side effects gives the possibility of improvement of the technique or of frequent use of the application. Some superiority appeared which concerns the effectiveness of local anaesthetic iontophoresis, either in the form of total relief or improvement of the symptom or in the form of the extension of positive results. Because of the limited effectiveness of iontophoresis in various diseases or of contra-indication of its application in certain diseases, remains under discussion the possibility of treatment with the combination of both techniques according to each case, after the evaluation of the possibility of improvement of their application.
