Abstract |
The present study examines the luxurious, large-scaled burial monuments of the 4th century BC that were found in Attica. In particular it analyzes the magnificent funerary monument of the metic Nikiratos and his son Polyxenos that was unearthed in Kallithea in 1968 which constitutes an excellent example of the architecture and sculpture of funerary monuments of the late classical period. The starting point of these impressive monuments can be found in the Attic cemeteries of the late classical period (end of the 4th century), when the display of wealth was halted after the resolution by Dimitrios Falireas that prohibited the construction of luxurious funerary monuments. The main part of the present dissertation focuses on the analysis of the funerary monument of Kallithea, through the presentation of the typology, the sculptural and relief decoration, the influences from other funerary (e.g. the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus) or choragic monuments (e.g. the monument of Lysikrates) and the understanding and interpretation of the historical context of the time (citizens of Athens, metics in Athens, Athenian democracy and social stratification, adolescents, slavery). In addition, other imposing funerary monuments of Attica dating at the same period are presented, contributing in the understanding of burial customs (e.g. the placement of the burials within or outside the cemeteries, their link to specific social groups), the cult of the dead, heroization and the socio-economic conditions of the time. Special mention is made to the written sources, which are the main evidence for the identification of the analyzed burial monuments. Also, some funerary monuments that constitute Heroes, Polyandria or Cenotaphs, and belong to the category of luxurious monuments (e.g. the hero of Harmyleia in Kos), are examined and associated with the display of wealth in the period we are examining. The dissertation concludes with the dating of the funerary monument of Kallithea and the summarizing of its contribution to the study of the evolution of the luxurious burial monuments of the late classical period.
