Abstract |
authentic experiences with living organisms with child-directed approaches such as inquiry. In this framework and in view of the fact that this department was involved in the European Project PriSciNet that developed a vision of inquiry based science education and inquiry-based activities for children 6-8 years old that were not previously tested in the first grade of primary school in Greece, this research was conducted, a case study to investigate the implementation of 3 PriSciNet activities regarding plants and animals in the A΄ grade class of a primary school (9 girls , 8 boys) in a mountainous village where the teacher-researcher was working as a substitute teacher in school year 2016-2017.
Two research questions were set : How would students to the inquiry based teaching and learning b. What would the teacher-researcher learn on teaching an learning about plants and animals from this experience?. Data for the first question , collected through an observation grid, interviews of 4 students following each activity, student-sheets (from Priscinet methodology) and teacher-researcher’s journal, showed that students were able to work in groups, collect data through observation and measurement but they were not able to pose questions or plan an investigation on their own. They also had difficulty in communicating their conclusions to the other teams. As to the second question, the DEAL (DescriBe-Evaluate- Articulate-Learning) model for critical reflection of a learning experience , by the teacher-researcher, revealed deficiencies in her conducting experiments and her understanding of experimental variables. Additionally her initial perception of what inquiry-based teaching is (doing an experiment) was with the stage of formulating a question and the stage of communicating your conclusions to the other students
