Abstract The aim of this thesis is the quantum–optical description of strong–field laser– atom interaction. Using a full quantum mechanical approach (namely considering the driving laser field in a coherent state) for the description of the high order harmonics generated by the interaction of strong infrared (IR) laser fields with atoms, we recorded the harmonic spectrum without the need of using any conventional extreme–ultraviolet (XUV) equipment. This was achieved by performing photon statistics on the IR field emerging from the harmonic generation medium. It was found that this radiation has a distinct non–classical behavior since the photon distribution consists of a series of well defined peaks, which correspond to the spectrum of high–order harmonics. The work is a synthesis of the fields of strong–field physics and quantum optics, and paves the way for studies in ultrafast XUV science using conventional IR diagnostics.
