Abstract |
Introduction:
Primary Health Care is considered a critical base for extending care to communities and vulnerable groups. Thus, it can be defined as the corner stone for national health. It has been reported that the cost-efficiency of health care would be better by transitioning the focus towards primary health care. While making reforms in primary health care, new healthcare units have started operating in the last years in Greece.
Purpose:
The purpose of this study is to investigate patients‟ experience of primary care services in Heraklion Crete through the use of newly established primary health care structures of the country, the Local Health Units (TOMY‟s).
Patients and Methods:
The survey has been carried out in the five TOMY‟s of the city of Heraklion Crete – Greece. A total number of 142 questionnaires have been selected. A sample of convenience and a questionnaire were used to collect the necessary information that included data on demographic factors and patients‟ experiences.
Results:
From the total number of 142 patients 28.67% were male and 69.72% were female patients. In general, health care recipients seem to have had positive experiences as the majority responded positively to the questionnaire questions with an average rating of 4.48 / 5 which appears to be related to the level of education. In addition, most of the responders replied that they would highly recommend TOMY to other civilians. In particular, the average score on this question was 9.33 / 10. However, problems arising in terms of few medical faculties, lack of laboratories and not convenient working hours.
Conclusions:
In conclusion, assessing the experience of health service, recipients play a major role since they are linked to certain indicators of quality, safety and effectiveness of health service. Through the study, it has been revealed that civilians have positive experiences from the use of TOMYs. However, problems arise in terms of few medical faculties, lack of laboratories and not convenient working hours. But no standard results may come up since such issue needs more investigation.
