Abstract |
This thesis examines the technological organization and strategies of lithic raw
material procurment practiced by the Palaeolithic hominins who inhabited Greece.
To address these issues a two-stage approach was undertaken including field
work and lab research. Firstly, the sources of lithic raw material used were identified,
by means of mineralogical and geochemical analyses. Secondly, the ways of different
reduction sequences and tools production with respect to different types of lithic raw
materials were determined. In an attempt to approach the question of different
hominin use of stone from a diachronic perspective, lithic assemblages from the
lower Palaeolithic open air site Rodafnidia, at Lesvos island, the Middle Palaeolithic
site Kalamakia Cave, at Mani Peninsula and the Upper Palaeolithic site Melitzia
cave, also at Mani Peninsula were studied. Questions of hominin planning, degrees of
mobility, site catchment definition and technological activity modes present on sites
have also been addressed.
Regarding Rodafnidia the results invite us to reconsider the so-called African
pattern and the role of igneous and metamorphic rocks, as a criterion to its definition.
At the Mani Peninsula the results shed light on behavioural aspects of two different
hominin species, Homo neanderthalensis and Homo sapiens. These two species
adopted different lithic raw material exploitation strategies as a result of different
modes of adaptation in a stable through time lithic environment.
This thesis adds to the broader discussion of the Greek Palaeolithic a new strand
of evidence that has remained largely unexplored.
