Abstract |
Dyscalculia or specific learning disability in mathematics is a learning disorder
characterized by an inability to understand mathematical concepts and severe deficits
in the acquisition of mathematical skills. It is a primary developmental cognitive
disorder of childhood that manifests itself as a disturbance in numerical ability and
affects every year a significant percentage of students with learning difficulties in the
Greek and global school system. Executive functions (EF), on the other hand, refer to
higher-level cognitive functions and are involved in the execution of goals and
intentional behavior of the individual, including the set of cognitive abilities necessary
to recognize and achieve a goal. The purpose of this paper is to highlight a possible
relationship between middle childhood children's executive functions and the presence
and severity of specific learning difficulty in mathematics. In the first part, there is a
theoretical review of the concepts of learning difficulties and dyscalculia, the profile of
students with mathematical difficulties and their special characteristics. What follows
is the theoretical review of the term executive functions and the relationship they may
have with learning disabilities and mathematics. Then, in the research part, the
methodology, the research design, the sampling and the data collection tools ΑΞΕΛ
(Executive Functions Evaluation Test) and ΑΣΥΠ (Concentration and Attention
Detection and Evaluation Test) are described in detail. This is followed by statistical
analysis of the data collected, which are discussed and analyzed in the conclusions.
Finally, some limitations and criticism of the research and future directions that can
emerge are mentioned.
