The aim of this thesis is the study of the 52𝑃3/2 → 5
2𝑃1/2 magnetic dipole (M1) transition of
atomic iodine, 127I, at 1315nm using an optical-cavity-enhanced absorption scheme.
Combining high atomic iodine densities, produced via high-power photodissociation of
molecular iodine at 532nm, and long interaction pathlengths, due to the high-finesse optical
cavity setup, we produced high atomic iodine column densities, which enabled the
measurement of the electric quadrupole (E2) component of the transition of interest. These
quadrupole component measurements performed in our lab are the only such measurements
to the best of our knowledge. The dimensionless ratio of E2 to M1 matrix elements was found
to be 𝜒 = 𝐸2/𝑀1 = [𝟎. 𝟎𝟖𝟓 ± 𝟎. 𝟎𝟎𝟒], with 𝑀1 = 1.15𝜇𝐵 = 0.0042𝑒𝛼𝐵.
Regarding the structure of this thesis, in the first part we describe the required theory:
gaussian beams, optical cavities, then the theory of atomic transitions, both from the side of
the effect of matter on light (Maxwell equations, atomic medium polarization, index of
refraction), as well as from the side of the effect of light on matter (transition rates, absorption
and stimulated emission of radiation, cross-sections, multipole expansion of the electric field
and allowed/forbidden transitions, and selection rules). Then, the specific theory of the
relevant M1 transition of iodine and a brief discussion of the photodissociation process of
molecular iodine into atomic are given. In the second part of the thesis, we present the
experimental scheme, we describe the measurement process, and finish with the analysis of
the results and our conclusions.
