Abstract |
In the past decade, the availability and role of mobile phones have significantly
increased. In the past, they were used solely for communication, while nowadays, modern
smartphones have become hand-held portable high-performance computers. Their
technological features allow people to use them for various tasks in various domains,
including work, education, entertainment, etc., while their potential benefits and
innovative use is still under investigation in other areas, such as the museum
environment.
This thesis proposes a system supporting the management of museum exhibits as well
as the authoring and presentation of narratives to museum visitors. Narratives are
dynamically generated according to predefined conditions and user profiles. This research
work is rooted in the use of smartphones in Ambient Intelligence Environments, and in
the exploitation of Semantic Web technologies for interactive authoring of narrative
stories. Thus, smartphones augment the museum experience by presenting museum
collections via Storytelling technologies. Various technologies stemming from different
research domains have been employed by the designed system. Unity3D based mobile
application and ReactJS administration panel are working on top of .NET Core web server
framework with an RDF compliant storage system.
Regarding the system implementation, a Model-View-Controller oriented architecture
was adopted, along with the cooperation of various subsystems. System components
have been designed and built based on a generic architecture, in order to support
knowledge management, annotation and extraction, multimodal interaction, content
personalization and UI adaptation.
Furthermore, the proposed system facilitates the extraction of semantic knowledge
according to user preferences and usage history. As a result, such information can help
the system to generate more relevant and personalized narratives.
A heuristic evaluation was conducted with the participation of 5 experts to study the
developed system in terms of usability and user experience. The evaluation results are
considered promising, confirming the usefulness of the system and encouraging further
research and development work in this area.
