Abstract Today nursing has various problems such as staff inefficiency, inadequate education and difficult working conditions. Generally The present study intends in measuring the nurses΄ perception in matter involving the working environment, the quality of health care, job satisfaction as well as the ability to make professional decisions. Methods The survey respondents were 97 nurses and nurses΄ assistants out of overall 500 active nurses in the University Hospital in Iraklion. The number of nurses approached were 170, but only 97 responded. 80 of them filled in the whole questionnaire. The minimum age of the sample nurses was 24 whereas the maximum one was 45. Men participation comes up to 13, while there were 84 women participants. Questionnaire Belimage from the Belgium Katholic University of Leuven was used after it was translated. This multiple choice questionnaire is composed of five sections. Each of the thematic sections concerns a difficult field and studies the nurses΄ perception in various working matters. Results This study΄ findings showed low levels of specialty and continuous education for nurses as well as their perception concerning the suitability and skillfulness they have. Limited times autonomy shortage, the feeling of exhaustion, working relations and the lack of appropriate management form such a working environment that job dissatisfaction appears and, consequently, a change of work place shows up. A great contribution to the nurses΄ dissatisfaction provide the following factors: low salary, few chances for professional development, despite the existence of qualified nurses and also the bad image of the profession to the society. As it has been proved there is close connection between working conditions and nurses΄ satisfaction and their retention in the workplace. Regardless of the working conditions, the majority of people questioned states their ability and satisfaction for being nurses. Conclusions We conclude to the need for enforcing nursing training and the establishment of continuing educational programmes, which will improve their image to society. The improvement of working conditions with the limitation of duties, the reduction of night shifts, the raise on the salaries and the nurses΄ autonomy, as well as the adequate time for qualitative health care, will contribute to the enforcement of their work satisfaction, therefore they will retain in their positions. An additional factor for qualitative health care, besides the ones referred to, is the necessary hiring of nurses΄ staff. Combing an effective management of the hospital, which will utilize the nurses qualified in a better way by giving them more professional chances and coordinating the personnel appropriately, the quality of the given services of the hotel will be evolved
