Abstract

The present study aims to examine the effects of a dog on social, communication and challenging behavior of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The study involves three single case studies. Three children diagnosed with ASD took part in six personalized sessions with the dog, the dog’s handler, and the teacher. The sessions took part in the children’s school. Sessions were video recorded and the videos were quantitative analyzed (General Linear Model, and descriptive statistics), to discover the changes on children’s behavior during the sessions. Moreover, questionnaires investigating children’s behavior were filled out by parents and classroom teachers, prior and after the sessions. Teachers participating in dog sessions were keeping diaries, providing useful information for the session’s outcome. Questionnaires and diaries were analyzed qualitative. The results of the present study shows that the presence of a dog in an educational session can improve social and communication behavior and increase challenging and stereotypical behavior of a child with ASD. Significant behavior modifications occurred in the frequency of physical proximity, the frequency and duration of eye contact, the frequency of social responsiveness, and in the challenging and stereotypical behavior.
