Abstract |
The aim of this master thesis is to record the perceptions of children to understand the importance of the quality of life of children in primary school, as well as to compare the perceptions of this group of students, with the corresponding ones that emerge in political and academic discourse. Two focus groups of the 5th and 6th grade of the primary school (3 male and 3 female students in each group) participated in the research (12 children in total), (6 girls & 6 boys). The selected sample of male and female students came from an urban elementary school in the municipality of Rethymno and consisted of Greek male and female students, as well as immigrants. For the purposes of the research, the qualitative method was chosen as the most appropriate, and in this specific work, the type of qualitative research chosen to record the students' perceptions regarding their quality of life is the focus groups method. The specific method was considered ideal, because the purpose of the research was to obtain information about the feelings, perceptions and behaviors of the groups regarding the role that quality of life may play for them. Focus group questions were used as tools for data collection and data was generated from student. The data was processed using the method of thematic analysis. The research questions concern children's views on children's quality of life, to what extent they approach academic and political discourse and if there are common elements. The results of the research showed that although an effort is made to promote quality free time in the school and family context by many educational programs, this has not yet been achieved. The results of the present study agree with many Greek reports that the quality of life of most children is shaped by the socioeconomic status of their families. As children grow older, their tasks-obligations increase, resulting in them perceiving school as limiting their free time. Also, reasons such as the inflexibility of the timetable leading to difficulties in implementing creative programs lead to the conclusion that academic and political discourse are far from the perceptions of students.
