Abstract |
Burnout is a serious mental syndrome that teachers often develop as well, due to the anxious nature of the occupation. In particular the school director, both as a teacher and as an administration leader, has a demanding, multidimensional role and increased responsibilities and challenges that have to be dealt with on a daily basis. All of the aforementioned are conditions for the development of burnout with negative consequences for both the school director and the whole school community. The aim of the present research was to investigate the level of burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, loss of personal accomplishment), the Covid-19 management stress and the stress stemming from the school legislative context, regarding the school directors of secondary education in the Regional Unit of Heraklion. Furthermore, to predict whether the burnout can be caused by stress that stems from Covid-19 management and from the school legislative context. The data collection was done through the completion of three different questionnaires: a) using the Maslach Burnout Inventory – Education Survey (MBI‐ES), b) using the Yildirim and Solmaz scale for Covid-19 related stress and c) using a self-made questionnaire for the measuring of stress due to school legislative context. The data were collected from 76 out of 94 secondary school directors in the Regional Unit of Iraklion from January to March 2023. The results of the research showed that the school directors experience a medium level burnout in all the three components of the syndrome. They also experience a low level Covid-19 related stress, whereas stress related to the large quantity of legislative context is of medium level. As for the perpetual changes on the selection process and the tenure extensions, the school directors reported that they experience low to medium level of stress. The burnout level was varied only in the component of Depersonalization in view of age, in the component of Emotional Exhaustion considering the type of school and in the components of both Depersonalization and Emotional Exhaustion in view of the years of service in state schools. In addition, Covid-19 related stress is a predictive factor of Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalization, whereas stress related to the large quantity of legislative context is a predictive factor of Emotional Exhaustion. Future research of a greater scale, along with the use of more quality methods, will bring this diachronic phenomenon of school directors burnout to light, which is related with their mental health as well as with the operational qualification of the schools.
