Abstract |
This paper attempts first to study the level of understanding the concept of variable by students in second grade of high school. According to the textbook, the variable is the letter x that represents any number. There are six different interpretations that children give to the letters. A survey was carried out, the first part of which is related to that purpose, showed that the biggest children’s difficulty concerns the concept of the letter as a specific but unknown number and the concept of the letter as a variable, so that it represents a whole rather than specific values. We divided the children into three levels of understanding the concept of variable and showed that most children are in the middle level. After attempts to study the understanding of a problem from the same students. There are four steps that the student should be able to do when he has grasped a concept and in fact a problem. From the survey we conducted it is revealed that most students are not able to expand a problem in new situations, whether it involves the construction of equivalent equations, or dissecting a problem into smaller ones to lead to the solution. At the end of this paper we attempt to relate the results of the two sheets that were given to children, each of the above studied the two goals mentioned above. Showed that out of 10 students belonging to the low level of understanding of the concept of the letter, only one answered correctly to the three problems of the second sheet. Of the 22 students who belong to the middle level only four responded correctly to all three problems, while from the nine students who belong to the high level five of them, the majority answered correctly to all three.
