Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the degree of satisfaction of patients in private and public Hemodialysis Units (HU) of the Heraklion Prefecture. This study focuses mainly on comparing the effect of the nursing care services between the private and public health sectors. Method: The sample of the study was 295 patients registered in the medical records of three Hemodialysis Units of the Heraklion county in October 2017. As a method for quantifying patients’ satisfaction, weighted, translated questionnaire was used, which was based on the SDIALOR statistical tool. Statistical analysis: We summed the continuous Likert scale items and calculated continuous scales for satisfaction. In total 28 sub-scales and 2 overall scales were computed. All sub-scales were rescaled to values between 0 and 10, while overall scales were rescaled to values between 0 and 100. The statistical tests that were employed, depending on the kind of variables and their distribution, are Pearson’s chi-square, Fisher’s exact test, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney. For all tests, the two-tailed p-value was calculated and the significance level was set at 5%. Results: The overall satisfaction was high (Median (ICH): 89.7 (77.9, 95.7). The patients stated they were very-highly satisfied with the total sector of nursing care and 93.4% of them, exclusively considering the nursing staff, would recommend HU to others. However, their satisfaction regarding the information they received from the sexual activity medium was low, (Median (ICH): 5.0 (2.5, 10.0)). Finally 41.6% of them stated they very-highly wished for the improvement of the psychological support they received from other professionals. During the individual comparison of the results statistically significant differences, (p<0,001), were noticed among HU in aspects concerning equipment and infrastructure. Characteristic examples are the above average satisfaction from the facilities (53.3%, VGH, 75.6%, UGH, 95.9%, MU), the equipment (39.1%, VGH, 78.6%, UGH, 95.9%, MU), the entertainment (39.0%, VGH 63.4%, UGH, 95.9%, MU), Conclusions: The patients who get treatment in HU of the Heraklion county were satisfied with most of the aspects of care they received. Their need for information concerning their sexual activity and psychological support from specialists was not satisfied. The nursing staff was skilled according to the patient’s expectations and their faith in HU was strengthened. The structure/hospital affected the degree of patient satisfaction and the private provider overridden the public in aspects of care related to facilities and equipment rather than to the treatment group.
